The historic Riese cobbler store in Beelitz hosts the group exhibition „Overview Effect.“ The „Overview Effect“ refers to the phenomenon experienced by astronauts when they see planet Earth floating in the black, infinite space of the universe. This phenomenon is characterized as an intense spiritual awakening in those who experience it, described as an „explosion of consciousness“ or an „overwhelming feeling of unity and connection accompanied by ecstasy,“ Something that is describe in the Christian tradition as an epiphany, an striking realisation.
The works exhibited here unfold an incredible and powerful poetic force: some by their apparent simplicity, others by their vision rooted in our immediate reality allowing us to connect with a vast cosmogony that embodies the world around us.
Framed in the old Riese cobbler store, which has existed since 1798, the shoe seeks to create a threshold existing between what we call ‘every day life’ and the privilege of living on a rock floating in an immense universe.
In other words what Chilean director Patricio Guzmán reminds us of in his documentary Nostalgia for the Light:
„Those who remember are capable of living in the fragile moment of the present. Those who do not remember live nowhere.“
